CHESTNUT SPECIFICATION
Chestnut timber is a specie well known for its durability and sturdiness. It is a straight grained, hard-wearing timber that is fairly course in texture. Sweet Chestnut wood has a particularly high tannin content and it should be noted that it will start to exude within the first few months after installation, especially when the timber becomes damp or wet. It is a natural, rustic product that hasn’t been treated and won’t require any preservative.
Chestnut is a very strong, long lasting and cost-effective way of fencing and is sourced from a locally managed sustainable woodland in the South East.
The prepared chestnut is cut into desired lengths that vary in diameter, particularly ideal for stock fencing. Our products are listed in variants, i.e. 75-125mm (3-5”), 125-150mm (5-6”) etc and mainly produced in lengths 1.65m, 1.8m and 2.4m. We endeavour to meet the size variation specified, but due to the nature of the item you may find diameters increased or decreased. This is also applicable to the length.
Chestnut post and rail – 2,3 or 4 rail systems. The width across the face of the half round morticed posts are between 150 – 200mm (6-8”) and come in 2m in lengths. These are cleft posts and do have bark on the outside. Please note that these posts aren’t peeled.
The ended rails are split into quarters and also have bark present. As standard, the rails are 2.9m, we recommend/calculate our bay sizes to be 2.6m (this is due to inserting the rails through the morticing approximating 150mm each end). We also stock 2m rails to suit a 1.65m bay, ideal for shorter distances.
Chestnut knee rail – Chestnut posts (length 0.76m) that have a single mortice and are used with the standard chestnut rails.
If you require a chestnut product that needs to be a specific diameter or length for a purpose, then please stipulate this when enquiring, thank you.
